A Little Child

She held on to him and begged him to take her with him. She didn't know him, but because he showed up she trusted him with her life!

My husband will return this week from his trip to Haiti where he has spent the past several days. The girl standing next to him in the picture above is from an orphanage Eugene and his group visited. Because of limited resources many of the children are malnourished, but on this day the group my husband was with provided food for them.

I have never been as physically destitute as this little girl, but my spiritual destitution has certainly compared to her physical plight. I see myself in her, and I see God in my husband. Eugene showed up in her life like God showed up in mine (God was always there; I just didn't see Him). Like this child clung to and begged Eugene I clung to God and begged Him to keep me with Him. The little girl didn't know my husband at all, and I didn't know God like He wanted me to know Him. Even so, like this child trusted Eugene, when God bent to draw me in I trusted Him with my life.

"But Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven'" (Matthew 19:14, ESV).

Like this little child reached out to Eugene for love, protection and nourishment God wants us to reach out to Him.
