In his final instructions to the Philippians Paul said, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things” (Philippians 4:8, ESV).

I might be a Christian if …

• My life exhibits whatever is true—honest and just towards both God and people. As a Christian I should not be faithful in my duty to God but then be neglectful in my duty to others. How I treat people is directly associated with my relationship with God.

• My life exhibits whatever is honest—worthy of reputation, honor, respect, and esteem. As a Christian I should not behave dishonorably towards the respected customs and expectations of society as long as they do not violate moral principles or interfere with God's Word.

• My life exhibits whatever is just—uncorrupted integrity. As a Christian I should not place more importance on the observance of religion than on dealing uprightly with others. Piety is not above right relationships.

• My life exhibits whatever is pure—chaste. As a Christian I should not dwell on improper thoughts, show inappropriate feelings, or engage in unseemly conversation. My thoughts impact my feelings; my feelings impact my words; my words impact others.

• My life exhibits whatever is lovely—pleasing, amiable, and agreeable. As a Christian I should not be sour, crabby, irritable, chafed, morose, stern, severe, unkind, or a faultfinder.

• My life exhibits whatever is of a good report—reputable and commendable. As a Christian I should not be disrespectful, discourteous, rude, or impure.

• My life exhibits whatever else is of distinctive quality and is praiseworthy towards God.

As a Christian I should give careful thought concerning my practice of these behaviors. I should study what they are, what my obligation is to them, and how my exhibition of them will impact the world around me. As a Christian I should be eager to behave in ways that offer life to others. I should be a follower of Christ and strive to be a reflection of Him. As a Christian I should think about these things. They are certainly worthy of my consideration.
